Hey!

I’m rather embarrassed to see I haven’t posted since December!

At the moment, real life stuff continues to keep me from sitting down and doing anything much with my hobbies. I’ve hardly rendered much in these past few months and the well of inspiration for freebies continues to be a bit on the dry side. Boo!

Still, I’m aiming to at least come up with something to offer for my favorite holidays, Halloween and Christmas.

Hope all the visitors to REC are enjoying the summer and being much more productive at rendering things than I am. ūüėõ

HiveWire Halloween Sale

Currently HiveWire is running a Halloween sale on select products.

Also, saw this on the recent Xurge3D newsletter:

Effective September 22, 2016

All Products in the Store were permanently reduced by 20%.

Excludes Gift Certificates, RealTime Game Distribution Licenses and HellFish Studios Products.

Not sure what prompted this, but I can’t help noticing new releases have slowed down a lot. His products were primarily for Poser and for almost all the older figures, so I suppose sales aren’t as robust as they used to be.

Noticed today too that Pixeluna has removed all the freebies from her site. She mostly had poses and character sets. I did the usual strike-through of the link text but kept the links. Sometimes these are archived on the Wayback Machine.

I’ll have a few Halloween freebies this week! Too many projects on my plate and I’m so slow on finishing them; feel a little guilty about that. :/

Added Sluggian freebies to Buried Treasures page

I mean, who knows when you might need a Battle Slug?

Really old figures, as you can tell by the textures, but that’s what shaders and other material packs are for, right? The Slug Freebies go with¬†the Sluggians free figure. The freebie set includes the Battle Slug, which comes with a few textures, a shell, and various saddles — three, I think. Also included are eyelashes and a t-shirt for the Sluggians.

It’s hard to tell, but little Sluggian dude up there does have eyelashes.

I should bug Traveler to see if he still has the¬†old Airship Dock hanging around and, if so, whether he’d be willing to upload it again. It was a Props Club newsletter freebie, which¬†I’ve used a number of times:

Sadly, it looks like Mada and Thorne’s old store — Faeriewylde and Faerie Dreams — and the forum are gone. A huge loss of numerous¬†wonderful freebies. There’s a link to a Facebook page but I’m not on FB so I have no idea what that entails.

Edited to add this from dollygirl’s comment:

For the store freebies you can go to http://www.mada3d.com. She has all of the store items plus some older items that were pay-for. There is also a really cool gecko, there, as well. As for the freebies that were located in the forum we will just have to wait and see.

Edited once again to note that I made add-ons for these three FD freebies that were available only through the forums:

That would be DS materials for Pook Ale (they weren’t very good materials though), tropical textures for the Snowdrop Dress K4, and patchy textures for the Jingle Dress.

Checking in

So visitors know I haven’t dropped off the face of the earth, since¬†it’s been well over a month since I’ve posted anything. Real life has been cutting into my fun time, darn it.

Related to freebie stuff, the DAZ/RuntimeDNA merger and recent policy changes at Renderosity have left me a little frustrated. For totally self-involved reasons, because these lead to dead links on the blog, which are a pain to maintain in the first place.

I think most of the RDNA freebies listed here will be okay as long as their forum remains open. The Zero Price ones I’m not so sure about; like Mike’s Tiki Bar, which I recently used for freebie textures and poses.

At Renderosity, a number of freebie providers have deleted their stuff¬†due to recent policy changes that I find both confusing and utterly ridiculous. From here on out I’ll probably be more selective in what I upload over there, though I’ve lagged way behind¬†in uploads¬†anyway.

Also, with all the new figures and the widening gulf between Poser and DS users, I’ve been giving some thought to where I want to focus my own rendering efforts and, consequently, how that would affect the type of freebies I offer here.

So many figures and renderers and different materials…it’s a bit overwhelming at times. For me, I think DAZ Studio 4.9 and Genesis 3 is the where I stop with DAZ. At least for now. There’s lots of support for Genesis 2 and Genesis 3, so I think I’ll continue to offer freebies for Gen4, Genesis 1, and Dusk and Dawn.

I’ve also been thinking lately that many¬†older third-party figures still have a lot to offer and it would be fun to explore extras for those as well.

My learning curve for Poser continues to be tragically slow, but I am making progress. In my defense, I’m not particularly¬†savvy with DAZ Studio either, and I’ve been using it¬†since 2007! I figure I’m just one of those slow learners, but I’ll eventually reach¬†at least basic competency. ūüôā

I have some odds-n-ends I’m working on, including uploading the transparency images from my old Renderosity product Transmap-O-Matic, which dated back to the hoary days of yore before DS could do tiling. I also have a few bits left over from the recent girly-girl nerds theme, though mostly texture images.

So off I go to get myself organized and hopefully I’ll be back with something before much longer.
